Blinking lights and mezcal,
Your silhouette through my glass,
Come closer,
Come closer,
Drink from me.
Traces of you in my drink,
Smokey cloves,
Dancing lips,
Moon kryptonite,
Taste from me.
Shoelaces vibrate,
Feel that bass penetrate,
Naive lovers dare,
Wise stars illuminate,
Follow me.
Past the dying cigarettes,
Chasing black boots,
Stairway to blindness,
So please close your eyes,
Open them wide.
Wendy A. Garcia is a Honduran-Mexican-Afro-Latina who was born and raised in Southern California. She received Bachelor of Arts degrees in Women’s Studies and Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California Irvine. Her poetry is published in two of Alegria Publishing’s anthologies: The Black & Latinx Poetry Project and The Latinx Poetry Project. In addition, Alegria Magazine featured Wendy’s captivating and heart-rending article Afro-Latinx Experience in the United States on www.AlegriaMagazine.com. Powerful Latinas Rising and My Spiritu have also interviewed Wendy on their blogs regarding her love affair with poetry, art, and her complicated experience as an Afro-Latina. Most recently, she was a participant in Cal State San Bernardino Anthropology Museum’s exhibit, Afróntalo. In true introverted-adjacent fashion, Wendy hides between the four-walls of her tiny home-art- studio. Wendy’s home-art-studio is a safe space for art therapy where she can sketch, draw, paint, write, and heal. Wendy’s thought-provoking collection of acrylic paintings and digital art portray narratives of underrepresented people, particularly people of color. Through abstract-expressionistic strokes of bold colors and sharp layers, Wendy breaks her own silence of abuse and explores the painful, lonely, and beautiful journey to freedom. Wendy’s artwork was displayed at The City of Costa Mesa’s ARTventure 2021 – A virtual Art Experience. Follow Wendy on Instagram: @bendywendyart
