[Poem-a-Week] Remember Me by Peter Witt

When the sun rises in the morning

When the sun rises in the morning
bringing warmth to your smile
and the mockingbird awakens you
with his stolen John Lennon song
remember me.

When you slumber into the kitchen
wiping sleep from your eyes,
wrapping your hands around a steaming
cup of coffee brewed just for you
remember me.

When you dress in gray slacks, blue sweater
that feel smooth and comforting,
picked especially for you by your
best friend, lover, and confidant
remember me.

When you walk the sheltie, feeling the breeze
caress your freshly pampered skin,
and neighbors wave in greeting, asking
how you are doing, what are your plans
remember me.

When you spend the afternoon looking
at photos of long ago trips
to Cornwall and the Galapagos,
where we walked together hand in hand
remember me.
