When the sky fades to black
that’s when it comes for me
it creeps, it crawls
it slithers, it slinks
right into the place
where I try not to think
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it comes for me
I writhe, I wriggle
I squirm, I scream
While it invades me in my dreams
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it comes for me
It chomps, it chews
It tortures, it tares
Until my heart cavity is bear
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it comes for me
I anguish, I ache
I wail, I weep
While my body begs for sleep
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it comes for me
It consumes, it conquers
It rules, it reigns
Every part of what’s left of my brain
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it comes for me
I brawl, I battle
I struggle, I strive
To be left alive
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it comes for me
It clings, it clutches
It grips, it grasps
Until it lets go at last
When the sky fades to black
That’s when it came for me
I withered, I wilted
I anguished, I agonized
Only a hollow shell left
To see the sunrise
From Arii: “I’m 25 years old from South Africa originally but moved to New Zealand just three years ago. I’m very much an amateur poet and only recently started sharing my poems and putting them out there. My dream would be to one day write and publish my own poetry book. The poem Loneliness really came about because of the isolation I felt from Immigrating to another country. I think it’s really a secret loneliness that all immigrants carry around in our hearts and sometimes can eat away at you a bit. It sort of becomes this physical entity in your life, that is almost inescapable and only really comes for us in the moments we are most alone and vulnerable, for me that’s in the night time.”
Great poem. Simple, easy to understand, hard to forget. Thanks for sharing.
